01 — Demand

India's electricity-demand context

The cleanest way to understand India's opportunity is to begin with load rather than ideology. Electricity demand is expected to grow at an average of 6.4% per year through 2030, adding more than 570 TWh of annual consumption over five years. Industry contributes roughly one-third of that growth, and cooling is becoming an increasingly important load driver.

Peak load has already risen 54% — from 162 GW in 2017 to 250 GW in 2024. This distinction matters to anyone underwriting a project: capacity must not merely exist on a national balance sheet, it must be deliverable when and where the grid needs it.

02 — Generation

The generation buildout is broader than solar

India reported 297.36 GW of non-fossil installed capacity as at June 30, 2026, including 288.58 GW of renewable capacity, against a national objective of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.

The IEA forecasts solar PV to meet around half of India's incremental electricity-demand growth through 2030, with solar generation rising about 24% annually and wind generation about 8.2% annually. Variable renewable energy's share of generation is expected to reach roughly 24% by 2030. A system carrying that much variable output requires flexibility, and flexibility is where the investable surface widens.

03 — Transmission

Transmission and the grid constraint

India's 2030 ambition requires simultaneous expansion of generation and networks. The Ministry of Power has planned transmission to integrate more than 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 and more than 600 GW by 2032.

Under the National Electricity Plan, the 220 kV-and-above network is projected to reach 648,000 circuit-kilometres by 2031-32, while inter-regional capacity is planned to rise from 120 GW in January 2026 to 168 GW by 2032. That changes the investable map: grid access, evacuation capacity and interconnection rights can be worth more than the generating equipment behind them.

04 — Storage

The role of energy storage

As variable generation approaches a quarter of output, the marginal value of the system shifts from energy to shape. Storage, hybridisation, forecasting, balancing and grid-supporting infrastructure become increasingly valuable as penetration rises — not as an accessory to generation but as a distinct class of contracted infrastructure.

For an underwriter, this reframes the question. The asset is not the megawatt; it is the ability to deliver the megawatt at the hour the grid is willing to pay for it.

05 — Capital

The private-capital requirement

The financing requirement is too large to be treated as a government-only undertaking. In July 2026 the World Bank approved $890 million of financing and grants for India's rooftop-solar program and said it would mobilise $4.2 billion in private commercial financing. The mechanism is instructive: public and multilateral capital lowers friction, while private balance sheets provide scale.

India also reported approximately $45.72 billion of renewable-energy foreign direct investment from FY2014 through FY2026, alongside substantial deployment by domestic financial institutions. The institutional question is therefore not whether capital will participate, but which structures earn an attractive risk-adjusted return after accounting for execution and country-specific risk.
